Outdoor Learning
A therapeutic garden is an outdoor space meticulously designed to cater to the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of its users. Research shows that spending time in a garden can significantly enhance emotional well-being and overall quality of life. Access to such green spaces helps to regulate circadian rhythms, lower blood pressure, reduce stress levels, and increase Vitamin D absorption. Engaging with the outdoors has been proven to be beneficial for both our health and mental well-being, underscoring the importance of maintaining our connection to nature—an idea widely recognized in the field of health and wellness.
Forest School
With the generous permission of Clare Country Park, we have established a Forest School nestled in a small copse of woods near our Clare site. This area provides pupils with the freedom to explore and engage in play in a way that is led by their interests and curiosity. Here, students can build and rebuild dens, climb trees, and utilize a campfire for cooking. Additionally, there are designated spaces for games and access to an outdoor classroom.
The Forest School philosophy is centered around child-led learning in a natural environment. It emphasizes the importance of outdoor play as a means of encouraging curiosity, creativity, and risk-taking. Through hands-on experiences, students develop resilience, confidence, and independence. The Forest School approach encourages exploration and discovery, allowing children to learn at their own pace while nurturing a deeper connection to the natural world.
Additionally, we organize three Outdoor Learning days each year, inviting the entire school to participate. These days offer a fantastic opportunity for students to develop social skills and enhance their bushcraft abilities, fostering teamwork and cooperation in a natural setting. The program also aligns with educational goals by incorporating elements of science, art, and environmental studies, making learning holistic and engaging.
Overall, our Forest School initiative supports personal growth and well-being, providing a safe and supportive environment where children can thrive. Through this experience, we aim to instil a lifelong appreciation for nature and a commitment to sustainability.
