English

In the English department at The Yellow House School, our goal is to guide and support students in becoming confident communicators—both in speech and writing. We focus on helping them use language creatively and accurately, while also developing their ability to analyze and understand the techniques used by writers.

We bring a sense of fun to our lessons, incorporating humor, outdoor activities, and educational apps to engage students and make learning English enjoyable. Our curriculum connects with other subjects like Outdoor Learning, Creative Media, and Independent Living to enhance cross-curricular learning.

We place great emphasis on encouraging students to develop the habit and pleasure of private reading, ensuring that each student reads for personal enjoyment on a weekly basis.

Our students are exposed to a wide range of literary works, including prose, Shakespearean plays, classical literature, traditional English poetry, and graphic novels. These varied texts challenge their understanding and provoke thought on some of the world’s most complex issues. We also use everyday situations to make English come alive, allowing each student to engage with the subject at their own pace and level of comprehension.

Our pupils span a range of abilities, and we tailor their English learning to match their individual needs. This is determined during their assessment placement and reviewed regularly to ensure progress.

Courses Offered:
  • AQA Functional Skills English (Level 1 & 2)
  • AQA GCSE English Language
  • AQA GCSE English Literature
  • AQA Unit Award Scheme

In addition to classroom learning, we enrich our students' experience by participating in activities such as the Into Film Festival, attending pantomimes or plays, and taking theatre tours with a local theatre company during each academic year.
